Just like your body, your car also needs proper maintenance to ensure that it will run smoothly. If you, as a human, need food, clothing, and shelter to keep yourself healthy, your car will need fuel and regular checkups. And just like humans who can get sick at sudden temperature drops, your vehicle can get damaged too.

Too much heat can make your vehicle’s engine overheat, and it might even damage its upholstery. But did you know that even cold weather can damage your car?

This is something many car owners do not know about. Auto experts say the cold weather can cause damage to all parts of your car over time, especially when the temperature drops below zero.

To help you avoid damage to your car during wintertime, here are some of the bad effects of cold on your vehicle.

Thickening of Engine Fluids

This is basic science– if you leave a liquid in a room with a cold temperature, the liquid will solidify. And that applies the same to your engine fluids such as the oil, antifreeze, power steering, and transmission fluid. When that happens, your engine might have a hard time functioning properly.

Lubrication is an important process to ensure that the engine of your vehicle is running smoothly. The oil has to go through your whole engine to lubricate them and ensure that they work properly. However, if the fluids start to thicken up, or even worst, solidify, it will be difficult for your engine to get the oil it needs to run steadily.

To avoid this, you can use an engine block heater for at least two to four hours before using your vehicle. This will help your fluids to stay in liquid form and also warm up your engine.

Tire Pressure Fluctuation

When the temperature drops, your tire pressure decreases. Tire pressure also decreases when your car is stationary. And under-inflated tires do not perform well and could be subject to failure, especially on icy roads.

Moreover, driving around with low tire pressure can result in major or fatal accidents. To avoid this from happening, you have to make sure that you regularly check your tire pressure indicator on your dashboard. And as soon as the light on your tire pressure indicator turns on, immediately inspect the tire and make necessary repairs. You might end up with a flat tire if you do not do this, and you would not want that.

Dead Battery

Your car’s battery is one of the most sensitive parts, more so when winter comes up. When the temperature goes down below zero, there is a high possibility that your battery will cool down. And that can make starting the car way difficult.

The easiest way to avoid this is to replace your car battery before the winter season. But never do it on your own. Visit your mechanic and have them replace the battery. This way, you can also ask them if any other problems need to be fixed.

Wiper Malfunction

During the winter season, there is a huge possibility that the blades of your wiper might get torn, while the transmissions might break. They tend to freeze onto the windshield, and they might break if you do not clean the glass or peel the wipers off before using them. A frozen wiper might also cause scratches on your windshield. So if you are expecting cold weather, make sure to take the wipers off or tilt them up. This way, the wipers would not have a surface to freeze onto.

The Best Car Protection

You might encounter all these issues during wintertime. But that does not mean there is no way to solve them. If there is one thing you can do to protect your vehicle from the cold weather, install a window tint. With all the proven benefits tinting can give, your car will have the protection it needs during the winter season.
